-Now Approved for LMHC CEs
Program Description:
Medical diagnoses and medication use in young children is on the rise, and the vast majority of these children are boys. The focus of this workshop is not gender differences per se, but how young boys as a group (based on select research of infancy and toddlers) experience a mismatch between early developmental style and the early educational settings and parenting situations they encounter. Broader social issues are involved, including a faster paced culture, higher expectations to achieve, and rushing kids through childhood.
Learning Objectives:
• Identify the limitations in psychiatrically diagnosing young boys 3-8 years old.
• Highlight research on infants and toddlers that illustrates how young boy development is unique, often challenging for parents and teachers, and how it can inadvertently lead to misdiagnosis.
• Analyze the broader social-cultural factors that contribute to trends in young boys being labeled with psychiatric diagnoses, and resultant proliferation of pharmacology.
Dr. Anthony Rao worked in the Department of Psychiatry at Children’s Hospital, and served as Instructor at Harvard Medical School where he trained psychologists and physicians in the use of CBT. He is the founder of Behavioral Solutions in Lexington, a private practice known throughout the Boston area for using behavior-cognitive therapy to help children without relying solely on medications. Dr. Rao regularly consults with families all over the country and has lectured at numerous colleges. He regularly presents at conferences, parenting groups, and conducts workshops for professionals who work with children. Dr. Rao has been the featured expert on documentaries for the A&E series Investigative Reports and MTV’s True Life series. His book, The Way of Boys: Raising Healthy Boys in a Complex and Challenging World will be published by Harpercollins Fall, ‘09.
