This workshop focuses on helping couples to identify and heal the parts of them that interfere with intimacy and communication so that they can achieve courageous love in which each partner becomes the primary caretaker for their own parts.  When this is the case, couples are able to communicate with compassion, calm, clarity, and confidence even around threatening issues. Couples in which one or both partners are from oppressed racial, ethnic, or sexual minorities will have additional bone bruises related to their personal histories of discrimination and to the legacy burdens that their group holds.

The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model is a highly efficient and effective way of guiding clients to a state of inner clarity and compassion. It is a gentle, yet powerful, healing delivery system that trusts and empowers the client’s self. Clients are able to calm and transform their troubling inner voices, the critical and anxious chatter, the compulsive distractions, their feelings of vulnerability and inadequacy. IFS principles and techniques are widely used in the treatment of trauma and severe diagnoses.

The workshop will be very practical. Participants will walk away with new perspectives and methods for even their most difficult couples.

Richard Schwartz, PhD, is the distinguished developer of Internal Family Systems (IFS), and founder of The Center for Self Leadership. He is a featured speaker for many national psychotherapy organizations, a fellow of the AAMFT, and serves on the editorial boards of four professional journals. Dr. Schwartz has published four books and over fifty articles about IFS. His most recent book is about using IFS with couples, titled “You Are The One You've Been Waiting For”. Dr. Schwartz lives and practices in Brookline, MA.
