Presenter:
Marilyn Downs, PhD, LICSW

The U.S. Surgeon General’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention calls for health and behavioral health care to reflect best practices in the assessment and treatment of suicidal individuals. The Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk: Core Competencies for Behavioral Health Professionals (AMSR) is a one-day workshop designed by researcher-practitioners to meet these objectives. Using a combination of expert teaching, video modeling, practice exercises, and small and large group discussion, AMSR provides an up-to-date review of what experts consider to be best practices in suicide care.

Participants will discover...
  • Increased understanding of the phenomenology of suicide from both a research and clinical perspective.
  • Increased confidence in how to utilize an empathic, direct and collaborative approach when working with suicidal clients.
  • Increased skill in eliciting detailed clinical information in order to assess clients’ suicide risk and develop an appropriate and collaborative crisis response plan.
Marilyn Downs, PhD, LICSW is a clinical social worker with over twenty-five years of experience in community and college settings. She is Director of Outreach at the Tufts University Counseling and Mental Health Service, and former Project Director for the Tufts Garrett Lee Smith Suicide Prevention Grant. Dr. Downs received her Master of Social Work from Boston University and her PhD in Social Work from Simmons College. She is on the faculty at the Boston University School of Social Work and has extensive experience teaching, supervising and training. Her research, publications, and conference presentations have focused on help-seeking, suicide prevention and intervention, mental illness stigma, peer effects on mental health, and clinical supervision.

Approved for 6 CEs for Social Workers, LMHCs, and LMFTs.
