Reshaping the Lives of At-Risk Children, Youth & Families Using Positive,
Trauma-Informed, Strength-Based Theories and Techniques

Presenter:
Charlie Appelstein, MSW

Strength-based practice is an emerging approach to guiding at-risk individuals that is exceptionally positive and inspiring. It begins with the belief that all people have or can develop strengths and use past successes to mitigate problem behavior and enhance functioning. This uplifting workshop will highlight many of the key principles and techniques of this transformative modality.

Participants will be able to...
  • Describe from both a neurological and psychological perspective the benefits and major features of using positive, trauma-informed approaches with at-risk children, youth & families.
  • List and use a host of strength-based verbal interventions that help professionals to better engage and motivate at-risk individuals.
  • Describe innovative strategies for enhancing self-esteem in at-risk individuals.
Charlie Appelstein, MSW is a nationally prominent youth care specialist and author whose primary focus is on teaching positive, strength-based theories and techniques to professionals who guide at-risk children and youth.  Charlie consults with treatment facilities, foster care associations, parent groups, schools, and juvenile justice programs throughout the U.S. and internationally.  He has authored three youth care books that are widely used within the field, including No Such Thing as a Bad Kid: Understanding and Responding to the Challenging Behavior of Troubled Children and Youth.

Approved for 3 CEs for Social Workers, LMHCs, and LMFTs.
