Addiction - A Relational Illness: The Dis-ease in Relationship with Self, Others, and Substances
(A Perspective on Addiction and its Implications for Recovery, Treatment, and the Therapeutic Alliance)

Presenter:
Kate Dare-Winters, LICSW

This presentation offers a relational frame for understanding the context of addiction and the work involved in recovering from and treating addictions. Both the nature of an addictive relationship with a substance or activity and the impact on other relationships will be addressed. We will examine “relationships” as the organizing principle and perspective for the work with individuals struggling with addiction, and the implication of this framework on the practical work of recovery, as well as the impact on the therapeutic alliance.  Interventions, strategies, and useful approaches will be shared to increase both comfort and effectiveness in working with an addicted population.

Participants will...
  • Be able to summarize the relational context for understanding the process of addiction and recovery.
  • Be able to name three ways a relational frame can have a significant positive impact on treatment.
  • Identify at least three new interventions and/or approaches for providing effective treatment to individuals struggling with addiction.

Kate Dare-Winters, LICSW has worked in the field of addictions and mental health for over twenty years. She received an MDiv from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and an MSW from Simmons Graduate School of Social Work. She is a Teaching Associate at Harvard Medical School and a supervisor at Cambridge Health Alliance.  Kate is on staff at Right-Turn, a creative substance abuse treatment program in Arlington and in private practice in Cambridge and Arlington, MA.

Approved for 3 CEs for Social Workers, LMHCs, and LMFTs.
