Keynote address:
Migrate on Monday, Attend School on Tuesday: Helping the Newest Arrivals

Westy Egmont, DMin

One of every five students in public education is an immigrant. Attention to their needs, school readiness and adaptation is critical to their lives and to the school’s mission. This presentation provides an understanding of the different populations and their needs, and offers tools and lessons to assist school social workers, including discussing and sharing appropriate interventions.

Westy Egmont, DMin, Associate Professor of Macro Studies at the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work is a specialist in immigration issues.  He directs the Immigrant Integration Lab, an applied research center exploring the intersections of social policy and social practice that impacts the positive adjustment of society and newcomers in the social, civic, spiritual and educational arenas.  Prior to BC, Egmont was the President of the International Institute of Boston with prior leadership in the Greater Boston Food Bank and Rift Valley Academy in Kenya.

Approved for 5.5 CEs for Social Workers and LMHCs.
