Co-Sponsored by NASW’s Social Work Therapy Referral Service (SWTRS)

Presenters: Eva Skolnik-Acker, LICSW and Anne Pelavin, LICSW

Given the realities of private practice environments, the importance of personal safety for social workers is clear. The NASW-MA Chapter recommends that all private practice clinicians have policies and practices that address their own safety, as well as the safety of their co-workers and clients. Attention to safety in the workplace can reduce burnout and the escalation of traumatic incidents. This didactic and hands-on workshop will provide the opportunity for participants to actively plan for the unanticipated, dangerous situation with a client, or someone associated with a client, by developing a safety plan, learning and practicing verbal de-escalation techniques, and the use of non-violent self-defense.

Participants will learn...

  • Learn how to develop a safety plan for private practice offices.

  • Learn and practice verbal de-escalation techniques.

  • Learn and practice non-violent self-defense.

Eva Skolnik-Acker, LICSW is a leader in the area of workplace safety and a mental health clinician, supervisor, and trainer. She was the founder/chair of The Committee for the Study and Prevention of Violence Against Social Workers for NASW-MA, participated in the NASW National Task Force on Social Work Safety, and develops training programs and consults for NASW-MA Chapter’s state-wide workplace safety initiative.

Anne Pelavin, LICSW is a psychotherapist in private practice, and consultant on Safety in the Workplace. She became certified as an Applied Non-Violent Self Defense Trainer in l983, after she was attacked by a client while working at a mental health center. Non-Violent Self Defense focuses on ways to evade, deflect and disengage from an attack, without hurting back.

Approved for 3 CEs for Social Workers, LMHCs, and LMFTs.
