This program highlights the sociocultural context of psychotherapy, including privilege, oppression, and culture. Based on a historical overview and contemporary viewpoints, we will explore culturally informed practice using psychodynamic/psychoanalytic approaches. The recognition of social oppression and the complexity of cultural identifications will be discussed, and a case illustration will serve to translate theory into practice.

Course Objectives: Participants will learn how:

  1. The sociocultural context of the client and the therapist influence conceptualizations of health and pathology in development.
  2. Psychoanalytic theory informs an understanding of sociocultural context in psychotherapy.
  3. Experiences of privilege and oppression contribute to complex, sometimes contradictory, cultural identifications, and challenging dynamics within the therapeutic relationship.

Usha Tummala-Narra, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in Counseling, Developmental and Educational Psychology at Boston College, and in Independent Practice in Cambridge. Her research concerns immigration, race, gender, mental health, and cultural competence in psychotherapy practice. She has served on the APA Presidential Task Force on Immigration, the APA Task Force on Re-envisioning the Multicultural Guidelines in the 21st Century, and she is the author of Psychoanalytic Theory and Cultural Competence in Psychotherapy.

Approved for 3 CEs for Social Workers and LMHCs.

This program was originally titled "Culturally Informed Psychodynamic Psychotherapy"

This event was originally scheduled for Monday, October 23, 2017, but has been reschedule to Monday, December 4, 2017.
