Keynote address: Migrate on Monday, Attend School on Tuesday: Helping the Newest
Arrivals with
Westy Egmont, DMinOne of every five students in public education is an
immigrant. Attention to their needs, school readiness and adaptation is critical to their lives and to the
school’s mission. This presentation provides an understanding of the different populations and their needs, and
offers tools and lessons to assist school social workers, including discussing and sharing appropriate interventions.
Westy
Egmont, DMin, Associate Professor of Macro Studies at the Boston College Graduate School of
Social Work is a specialist in immigration issues. He directs the Immigrant Integration Lab, an applied
research center exploring the intersections of social policy and social practice that impacts the positive
adjustment of society and newcomers in the social, civic, spiritual and educational arenas. Prior to BC,
Egmont was the President of the International Institute of Boston with prior leadership in the Greater Boston
Food Bank and Rift Valley Academy in Kenya.
