The Pioneer Valley Region's Private Practice Shared Interest Groups (SIGs) support members with all aspects of private practice, including administrative, marketing, legal, and clinical issues. In addition to focusing on practical matters such as billing, and insurance company policies, the committee also addresses how these concerns impact clinical work. By attending a meeting, NASW members can join the Private Practice Listserve.

We are proud to present the film Transamerica, which addresses Transgender Issues, as a stimulating way to earn 3 CEs. The program will include an introduction, film presentation, and a facilitated discussion after the film.

Film Synopsis: Southern Californian Bree Osbourne (Felicity Huffman), formerly Stanley Chupak, has finally received the news that she has been approved for male-to-female sexual reassignment surgery. But before her therapist will allow her to go through with the surgery scheduled in a week’s time, Bree has to deal with an unresolved issue from her past: a 17-year-old identifying himself as her son. So Bree flies to New York City, bails the youth out of juvenile detention, and offers him a ride back to Los Angeles without disclosing that she is his father. Both her plans and his go awry, and as secrets will out, what might become a friendship (or more) founders. The boy’s step-father, a sex-change support group, a peyote eater, a Navajo wrangler, and Bree’s family all play their parts in this exploration of family, gender, and expectations. Ellen Bravo long-time activist for working women has focused her energies on working for paid sick days and paid family leave. Now Director of Family Values @ Work Consortium, a network of state coalitions, she began working for 9to5, National Association of Working Women in 1982 and served as its National Director until 2004. In addition to Taking On the Big Boys, Ellen wrote The Job/Family Challenge: A 9 to 5 Guide (Not for Women Only). Ellen is frequently interviewed by the media as a leading spokeswoman on working women’s issues. Her presentations have been described as “moving, witty and sometimes bawdy.” Her blogs appear on Huffington Post, Feministing and other sites.
