The NASW-MA Chapter honors the legacy of Mayor Thomas Menino, a dedicated and caring public servant.
Dr. Angelo McClain, NASW’s CEO, knew him personally and says it best.
He is unquestionably one of the greatest Bostonians of our time. When he didn't run for an unprecedented 6th term this year, we all knew that something was terribly wrong.
He loved Boston and he loved being mayor. I used to tease him, telling him that he should officially change his first name to Mayor.
I had the privilege of working with him on a number of issues. It always seemed as if he was personally experiencing whatever crisis or challenge the city was going through.
Personally, I'll remember him as the champion for the everyday Bostonian, which was evidenced by the fact that he knew so many people by their first name. When I became Commissioner, he continued to call me Angelo (not commissioner like everyone else did.) I believe that his goal was to meet and know every Bostonian. He made a world class city feel like a place "where everyone knew your name."
I will remember him fondly.
