Contact your State Legislators by 2/4/15 at 5:00pm!

The legislative session has begun and NASW is the primary sponsor of two vital bills supporting the social work profession. To show how critical these bills are, we need your help to accrue as many legislative co-sponsors as possible before the February 4th, 2015 at 5:00pm deadline.

Please call both your State Senator and State Representative to urge them to co-sponsor NASW’s two professional bills:

  • Social Work Student Loan Forgiveness Bill FACT SHEET

  • Social Work Licensing and Consumer Protection Bill FACT SHEET

To find your Senator and Representative and their contact information, visit Fact sheets for each bill are above. Here is a sample script you may use when you call your Representative and Senator:

Hello, my name is _______and I’m a constituent of Representative/Senator ______ living in (city/town). I am a member of the National Association of Social Workers - MA Chapter, which has a membership of over 7,700 social workers across the Commonwealth, and I am calling to request that Representative/Senator ______ co-sponsor two of our bills.

The first is NASW’s Social Work Student Loan Forgiveness bill, filed by Representative Pignatelli (House Docket #1119) and Senator Eldridge (Senate Docket #1280). This bill would create a student loan repayment program for social workers in areas of high need, creating an incentive for qualified individuals to work in underserved areas of the state.

The second bill is NASW’s Social Work Licensing and Consumer Protection bill, filed by Representative Brodeur (House Docket #3215). This bill establishes minimum professional standards for the social work profession and increases transparency for consumers of social work services.

NASW has a huge opportunity to strengthen the social work profession. Your phone calls will absolutely make a difference. If a legislator asks you a question that you cannot answer, or to report the results of your call, contact Christine Poff, NASW Director of Government Relations and Political Action, at 617.227.9635 x12 or, and Christine will follow up with them.
