Erica Kirsners, Chair
The Social Work Therapy Referral Service (SWTRS) continues with its mission of helping people find therapists; increasing referrals for our members and providing support to them. In addition, SWTRS educates the public about the work that social workers do.
Barbara Burka, Anita Mulcahey and Jill Millis answer calls from those individuals who are seeking information on mental health services and make the appropriate referrals. Carolyn Bonier provides backup. There have been several changes on the Commission. Lauren Komack and Hugo Kamya have stepped down, and there are three new members. Catherine Weisbrod brings her extensive knowledge of social work agencies and EAP’s. Linda Weisberg has a thorough understanding of group practice and treatment across the life span, and Noel Johnson her broad work in the public sector.
SWTRS holds two workshops per year. This year, the commission decided to open our workshops to non-members in order to increase the visibility of SWTRS and increase membership. In November, Margaret Waller spoke on "Bearing Witness: Affect in Psychotherapy," and in May, Frances Booth presented on Internal Family Systems.
Our relationship with MEDA, the Multi-Service Eating Disorders Association, continues, with our members getting an initial membership discount for their first year.
The Annual Spring Open House was on May 20 in Newton, attended by about 25 members and prospective members. It continues to be a wonderful time for members to meet Barbara, Anita and Jill, as well as talk to colleagues and share ideas and support for the business of private practice.
Increasing numbers of prospective clients find out about our service on our website, www.therapymatcher.org. The e-mail newsletter for our 265 members has monthly updates on the many practical issues of running a private practice, including dealing with managed care, offices available for sublet, openings in therapy groups, as well as employment opportunities.
If you are interested in finding out more about increasing referrals to your practice by joining SWTRS, log on to www.therapymatcher.org, or send a self-addressed envelope (58 cents) to NASW to request an application.
