Statewide Ballot Questions
NASW-MA decided not to take a position on the ballot questions after surveying members and seeing such varied responses to the questions related to social work. However, you can see the results of the survey that went by email to all members – 400 of you responded! Thank you for your thoughtful comments and answers.
Question 1:Gambling: Allows the Gaming Commission to issue an additional slots license.
NASW survey results: No – 81%; Yes – 7%; undecided or no position – 12%
Question 2: Raise the Charter School Cap: Authorizes up to 12 new or expanded charter schools each year.
NASW survey results: No – 66%; Yes – 20%; undecided or no position – 14%
Question 3: Farm Animals: Prohibits certain methods of farm animal containment (cage-free).
NASW survey results: Yes – 76%; No – 9%; undecided or no position – 15%
Question 4:Marijuana: Legalizes recreational use for 21 and older.
NASW survey results: Yes – 51%; No – 41%; undecided or no position – 8%
In addition, local cities and towns may have ballot questions. Boston’s Question 5 is the Community Preservation Act – a YES vote will bring needed revenues for affordable housing, park and greenspace improvements, and historic restoration.
