This workshop will provide an overview of the State’s legislative process and how to effectively lobby lawmakers by harnessing what you learned in school. Come and see how clinical skills can be used when discussing legislation with stakeholders.
Speakers: Sophie Hansen, LCSW, Political Director, NASW-MA, and Jordan Berg Powers, MA, Executive Director, Mass Alliance.
Course Objectives:
- Participants will understand the different trajectories of how a bill is passed and where they can intervene to affect its movement within the State House.
- Participants will understand the foundations of campaign strategies (i.e. canvassing and phone banks) and why they are effective.
- Participants will leave with concrete resources and know the first steps to take when considering running for office.
The program is approved for 2 CEUs.
This program is free for NASW members / $10 for non-members.
Please Note:
- The workshop will take place at King’s Chapel Parish on 64 Beacon Street in Boston. Please note there are no markings/signs labeling King’s Chapel Parish, it resembles an old house across from the Boston Common with a 64 on it.
- Public Transportation to either Arlington (Green Line) or Charles/MGH (Red Line) is highly recommended; both are a 10 minute walk. If you must drive, parking at the Boston Common Garage is the closest.
- Do not type in “King’s Chapel” in your GPS otherwise it will take you to the Church 15 min away from the desired location.
- Once you have arrived, please ring the doorbell and staff will lead you to the 2nd floor where the workshop will be held. Staff will be at the door for the entirety of the evening.
- This location is accessible for those with limited mobility: If a ramp is needed you may use their back entrance (55 Branch St) and an elevator will take you to the second floor where the workshop is located.
- The room will be packed and there is a small air conditioner so please be prepared and dress in layers!
- No refreshments will be served but please feel free to bring your own beverages (water!) and snacks.
No on-site registration
