Civic Engagement as a Social Work Intervention: Where Macro Meets Micro | 1.5 CEUs Wednesday, September 6 @ 12:00 - 1:30pm EST Speaker: Chelsea White-Hoglen, MSW Virtual on Zoom
This workshop will deepen the knowledge related to civic engagement as a necessary social work intervention in all practice settings, with an exploration of our professional code of ethics and the research that relates to the positive impact of civic engagement on individuals, community groups, and policies. Vot-ER will present on the evidence supporting civic engagement as a social determinant of health; prepare social workers for the critical role they play in improving the health outcomes of patients and clients through civic engagement; and provide tools that can be easily integrated into all practice settings to empower your clients to vote.
This presentation emphasizes the overlap between historically disenfranchised and underrepresented community groups and community groups that have been historically underserved by the healthcare system and who have been historically marginalized and oppressed within the healthcare system and social structures at large: Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color, rural people, poor people, and LGBTQIA+. This presentation also addresses the importance of addressing systemic vulnerability to supplement solving individual problems and offering individual solutions, especially in regards to contributing to social justice across diverse identities.
Deepen knowledge and understanding of civic engagement as a social determinant of health that influences every aspect of social work practice and individual client experiences. Prepare social workers to feel confident leveraging civic engagement as an intervention and prevention tool during client interactions. Provide tools that can be seamlessly and easily integrated into all practice settings to empower social workers and their clients to vote.
