This program will explore the treatment of pain in medical settings, with special focus on chronic pain and illness. We will examine how specific Social Work interventions work to prepare patients for pain and result in reduction in distress. We will discuss the absence of Social Work in many pain treatment centers and what needs to be done to rectify this. We will pay specific attention to the ways in which diversity plays a part in both pain sensation and treatments of patients in pain in medical settings.


  • Participants will understand the unique challenges of chronic pain in medical settings

  • Participants will learn specific interventions for pain and chronic pain in the field of Social Work.

  • Participants will understand the Acceptance and Commitment intervention for Pain and Chronic Pain.

Speaker: Johnna Marcus, LICSW, is a LICSW in Massachusetts with an MSW from the University of Pennsylvania in 2015. Her current work is at MGH in the Heart Failure and Transplant division. Her previous work experience includes methadone clinics, inpatient psychiatry facilities and inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment centers. Johnna’s clinical interest areas include organ failure and psychosocial interventions, Motivational Interviewing, and CBT for addiction intervention. She has written articles for Social Work Today and The New Social Worker. She has been presenting on and writing about Pain and Chronic pain for the past two years in an effort to build more awareness for our patients in pain.
