Ethics in Addiction Treatment | 1.5 CEUs

Thursday, September 14 @ 12:00 - 1:30pm EST

Speaker: Chris Dorval, LICSW, LCDCS, LADC1

Virtual on Zoom

In the world of behavioral health, it is important for professionals to maintain certain standards of practice for the safety of the patient, clinical and agency. Furthermore, the need to protect patient confidentiality while navigating multi-layered systems continues to grow increasingly complex as technology and patient needs continue to evolve. Maintaining ethical standards and boundaries is of primary importance. This presentation reviews the guidelines of ethical practice and privacy protection regulations, such as HIPPA and 42 CFR Part II, and discusses ethical risk management strategies to apply this knowledge into practice. In this workshop, participants will have the practice of applying knowledge of confidentiality regulations to complex case studies, as well as, practice skills of active listening, self-reflection, and self-care help to reduce ethical challenges in practice.

These issues will be discussed in relation to how diversity and culture can sometimes conflict and lead to new challenges. Participants will discuss how ethical risk management can be used to establish best practices.

  • Participants will be able to demonstrate the skill of active listening and utilize it to maintain professional communication.

  • Participants will be able to verbalize the importance of self-reflection and self-care in practice.

  • Participants will be able to conceptualize and articulate ethical risk management strategies in a case study.

  • Participants will be able to describe establishing healthy boundaries and the benefits and risks of self-disclosure.

  • Participants will be able to articulate the foundational elements of HIPPA and 42 CFR Part II and apply this knowledge to a real world case scenario.
