Keynote Address - Words that Work Along the Care Continuum of Serious Illness, with Dr. Jennifer Ritzau: Conversations with people affected by serious illness often challenge us. When done well, conversations can be deeply rewarding for clinicians and provide patients and their families with necessary guidance. This workshop will provide opportunities along the care continuum to engage patients and families, and will provide participants with “words that work” to allow you to communicate more efficiently and effectively. - Leverage 6 Essential Tools to enhance Communication Skills.
- Identify opportunities at all stages of illness to engage patients around goals of care.
- Be able to effectively utilize a Time Limited Trial as a harm-reduction strategy when interventions are unlikely to be helpful.
Workshop Discussions Available: The Impact of Grief on the Family Dynamic and How Social Workers Can Help, with Lauren Yabut, LICSW, MSW: Explore family systems theory in relation to family loss. Examine Changes in the family after the loss of a loved one. Identify individual grief styles and how they effect in the family. Identify maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Estate Planning 101: The Basics and Beyond, with Amy Stratton, Esq: We will review the estate planning tools that protect patients - and their families - through the stages of independence, incapacity and end of life.
Medical Aid in Dying: Exploring the Practical and Ethical Issues Impacting Utilization, with Kimberly Giamportone, PhD, MSW: This workshop is an opportunity to build an understanding about Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) through the exploration of terms and definitions used across the U.S., as well as within legislative bills specific to Rhode Island. We will also apply a social justice lens and invite participants to engage in discourse regarding ethical barriers to accessing services in states currently providing MAID as an end-of-life care option.
