This session explores how structural determinants of health—socio-economic, political, and environmental factors—drive health-related social needs and how healthcare sites can address these through nonpartisan voter registration initiatives. Highlighting real-world examples from over 900 healthcare sites using Vot-ER’s nonpartisan resources, attendees will gain practical strategies for integrating voter engagement into the client's experience.

Explain the unique advantages of social workers promoting nonpartisan voter registration and civic participation.

Christina Cazanave-McCarthy, MSW, is an accomplished macro social worker, educator, and advocate with over 15 years of experience. A graduate of the University of Central Florida with a Master's in Social Work, she currently serves as the Executive Director of the National Association of Social Workers – Florida and Virgin Islands Chapters (NASW-FL/VI). Her work focuses on civic engagement, advocacy, and policy, particularly on voter rights, social justice, and addressing the impact of voter suppression laws on marginalized communities.Christina is deeply involved with professional networks such as NASW, the Association for Community Organization & Social Action (ACOSA), and Vot-ER. She chaired the Legislative Committee of NASW-Florida and has held leadership roles within NASW-Florida's Civic Education and Engagement Sub-Committee. Her dedication to civic participation extends to her work with organizations like the Civic University and the Institute for Social Policy.
She has presented at numerous national and regional conferences, including NASW's annual meetings and Council of Social Work Education events. Her sessions have centered on mobilizing social workers for civic engagement and dismantling advocacy fears. Her research and presentations contribute to a broader conversation about the role of social workers in democracy, focusing on integrating civic responsibility into social work education. With several published articles and book chapters, Christina inspires future social workers through teaching, writing, and her unwavering commitment to community empowerment and voter engagement.
