This meeting is part of a mini series on trauma.
Prior to meeting, participants will read:

Discussant: Jacqueline Savage Borne, LICSW
Hospital Program Manager, Passageway at Brigham and Women’s Hospital

Using a book as a springboard, this group will discuss psychosocial issues relevant to clinical social work. Using the content of the book as well as the experience of the discussant, the group will focus on developing a deeper understanding of the trauma associated with domestic violence as well as social work strategies that can support victims.

Learning objectives (participants will...)

  • Recognize indicators, overt and subtle, of domestic violence victims..
  • Recognize tactics, overt and subtle, of domestic violence abusers.
  • Appreciate the role of power and control in domestic violence behavior.
  • Appreciate the scope/prevalence of both physical and emotional abuse.
  • Examine clinical strategies to recognize the roles of shame and guilt.
  • Review use of assessment "tools”/screening questions to elicit discussion.
  • Learn clinical self-care strategies in dealing with the client who is unable to leave the abusive situation.
