About the Workshop: This program explores how extreme risk protection order (ERPO) laws can be used as a suicide prevention strategy and highlights the role of social workers in identifying and responding to individuals at-risk. Participants will review the legal framework, current research on firearm access and suicide prevention, and the implications of the Vote Yes for a Safe Massachusetts ballot initiative for social work practice and public policy. 

Learning Objectives:

• Describe the purpose, legal process, and key provisions of extreme risk protection order legislation in MA and RI. 

• Analyze the evidence supporting ERPOs as a suicide prevention strategy, including their potential benefits, limitations, and ethical considerations for social work practice.

• Evaluate the implications of the Vote Yes for a Safe Massachusetts ballot initiative for clients, communities, and the role of social workers in suicide prevention and public policy.

About the Workshop: Grief impacts all of us on so many levels, though we don't talk about it (enough)! We will explore what gets in the way of us talking about grief, anticipatory grief, stigmatized losses, disenfranchised grief and more in the seminar. Participants will leave with tangible tools and practical ideas to better understand the grieving process, as there are so many layers. 

Learning Objectives:

• Participants will be able to identify how grief manifests uniquely in children and adolescents, and apply age-appropriate support strategies.

• Participants will be able to assess personal biases and assumptions regarding death and dying to foster an open, empathetic approach to caregiving.

• Participants will be able to develop a personalized self-care plan to manage compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and professional burnout.

Speaker Bio: Ryan Loiselle, MSW, LICSW is the sole proprietor at RI Grief Counseling, LLC in Providence, RI. He provides grief counseling services to children, teens and adults. He was previously the program director for FRIENDS WAY in RI for over 14 years. Ryan has been involved in working with children, teens and families who have experienced grief for the last 25 years. Prior to joining FRIENDS WAY, he worked at Merrimack Valley Hospice with a concentration in pediatric palliative care and children’s bereavement. He also served as the program director of “Jeff’s Place”, a bereavement center in Wayland, MA created by FRIENDS WAY founder, Jenny Kaplan. Ryan studied at the University of Rhode Island and received his degree in Human Development and Family Studies, with a minor in Thanatology (the study of death, loss, grief, and bereavement). He went on to Simmons College in Boston, MA and received his master’s in social work. Ryan is also involved with Experience Camps, one-week grief camps for children and teens. Additionally, he has presented at several conferences for NASW (National Association of Social Workers) and for the National Alliance for Children's Grief on children's bereavement. He joined the board of directors for the NACG in January 2022.

Intersecting Identities: Working with Queer Autistic Clients

About the Workshop: This workshop provides therapists with a framework for working with queer Autistic clients and explores the intersections of the LGBTQ and neurodivergent communities. Participants will explore the use of queer theory and minority stress theory to contextualize the experience of, and support, queer Autistic clients. This workshop should strengthen cultural competence in working with individuals from both communities and attendees will have a chance to learn and practice new skills through a combination of lecture and small group discussions of case examples.

Learning Objectives:

• Define queer theory and minority stress theory and give examples of how those theories can be used when providing care to queer Autistic clients.

• Utilize language and concepts that are affirming of both queer and neurodivergent identities.  

• Name two ways to support queer Autistic clients in navigating systems that prioritize straight, cis, neurotypical individuals. 

Speaker Bio: Allie is a clinical social worker with strong interests in gender care, trauma, neurodivergence, and social justice. They began their career in NY in the early 2000’s but have been living and working in RI for the past 7 years. They are currently the Director of Behavioral Health and Social Services at Thundermist Health Center, an FQHC located in RI.
