Welfare Bill: November 2013 Update

Welfare Bill MUCH IMPROVED after extensive advocacy by NASW, NASW members, and partner advocacy organizations!

Thanks to the advocacy of social workers around the Commonwealth and our allies, the welfare reform bill that passed the House last week was much less damaging than it could have been. NASW MA chairs the Welfare Coalition, made up of more than 15 statewide advocacy groups, that banded together with supportive legislators and were able to get significant improvements incorporated into the bill. Click here for a fact sheet summarizing the legislation. This summary was created by our ally Deborah Harris at Mass Law Reform Institute.

A conference committee will be assigned in the coming days to work out the differences between the Senate version of the bill that passed several months ago and the House version. Rep. Marjorie Decker of Cambridge was a tremendous ally in this campaign, filing our amendment that sought to resolve many of the concerns the Welfare Coalition had with the bill. If you live in her district, please take a moment to send her a thank you note. If your legislator is listed here, they took a leadership role in supporting our efforts in the House. Please take a moment to thank them! You can find your legislator by clicking here.

NASW was quoted in the press on this issue. Click here for the Globe story and for the State House News story.

Victories like these are possible because of our work together. Thank you for your membership in NASW and for working with us to keep up the fight for the most vulnerable families in the Commonwealth.
