Sheriff Elections

With more than half of all the people incarcerated in Massachusetts living in county jails, overseen by local sheriffs, the NASW-MA Criminal Justice Shared Interest Group wants to shift policy by impacting the sheriff races.

Reporting to no one but the voters, sheriffs hearing concerns about issues like solitary confinement, jail time because bail is unaffordable, and inappropriate treatment of pregnant women may recognize that compassionate care and good programming are what the public wants.

Decreasing recidivism, treating addiction and saving money are all possible under a sheriff’s watch!

Working in coalition with the Criminal Justice Policy Coalition and the Ad-Hoc Coalition Against New Jails in Massachusetts, NASW-MA helped develop materials to help YOU vote with a criminal justice mindset in the September 8, 2016 primary and the general election two months later on November 8th.

If you have an opportunity to meet sheriff candidates, attend and ask questions. Like any other election, there may be house parties and candidate forums for those running for county sheriff.
