Take Action to Prevent Medicare Reimbursement Cuts for Social Workers

Proposed reductions in Medicare rate reimbursements could have disastrous impacts on clinical social workers. The good news is that we have the power to prevent these cuts by submitting public comments by THIS Friday, September 27th. NASW has made it easy to take action with this form which includes a letter template.

Even if you are not a Medicare provider, it is important to note that private/commercial insurance companies like Tufts and BCBS often follow Medicare's lead on rates, meaning that these cuts could impact you, your practice, and ultimately your client's ability to access care if this change forces you to drop Medicare.

Submit comments to make it clear that we will NOT stand for this. It is imperative that social workers be paid fully and fairly, and that client access to care remains unobstructed.

As your professional association, NASW has already submitted comments as an organization, but we need your specific voices to make an impact. Don't delay - submit your comments now .

Important Notes on the Proposed Cuts:
  • These proposed cuts include a four (4) percent cut in 2020 for code revisions or a seven (7) percent cut in 2021 to increase reimbursement for evaluation and management (E/M) services which are provided by physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants
  • Clinical social workers are already only reimbursed at 75% of the physician fee schedule, lower than any other mental health provider in Medicare Part B
