SNAP is Under Attack,

So We Wrote a Letter to the Globe

The Trump Administration is set to enact the first of three rules targeting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This rule, parts of which will go into effect on April 1, 2020, will retract SNAP benefits from approximately 700,000 able-bodied adults with no dependents. In Massachusetts, this may impact 35,000 unemployed individuals, from both urban and rural communities.

This rule is severely misinformed and goes directly against the comments submitted by thousands of people during the comment period. The rule change ignores the realities of the job market for low-skilled and low-wage workers, and would cause serious harm to unemployed and underemployed adults. This rule does nothing to help people get good, consistent jobs that pay a living wage; it simply ensures that people will go hungry.

We partnered with our friends at the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute to let it be known that cuts to SNAP will make people's tough times even harder. Did you see our Letter in The Boston Globe?

In addition to increasing hunger in our communities, this rule change will increase health care costs, increase poverty, and harm retailers. In Massachusetts, this would be a significant loss of federally-funded SNAP dollars, leading our economy to forgo approximately $65 million per year.

Although the rule could get held up in court, we must do everything in our power right now to take action at the state and federal levels. Ways to take action:
  • Help us identify folks in Massachusetts who may be impacted by this new rule
  • Tweet your opposition to the rule using the hashtags #HandsOffSNAP and #SNAPGrinch
  • Write a Letter to the Editor to your local newspaper, letting your community know that this rule is cruel, harmful, and does nothing to help our friends and neighbors get good jobs that pay living wages
  • Take action to close the โ€œSNAP Gapโ€ in Massachusetts by calling or emailing your state legislators to ask them to help advance SB678/HB1173 out of Ways and Means Committees and onto the House and Senate floors
  • Attend the SNAP Gap Lobby Day at 10:30 am on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, in room 428 of the Massachusetts State House (Boston)
