Tell the Senate to Vote YES on Both the Healthy Youth Act and Breakfast After the Bell

At 11:00 am today (1/16/20) the State Senate will take up two important bills: the Healthy Youth Act and Breakfast After the Bell legislation. Can you call your State Senator and help us ensure these two bills make it over the finish line? The health and well-being of youth across the Commonwealth will be significantly improved as a result of both of these bills.

An Act Relative to Healthy Youth (SB2459), or the "Healthy Youth Act," will require all public schools that teach sex education to use a sex ed curriculum that is comprehensive and medically accurate. Comprehensive and medically accurate sex education is the best way to reduce sexually transmitted infections, prevent unintended pregnancies, and teach young people about consent. The Healthy Youth Act is a priority bill for NASW-MA.

An Act Regarding Breakfast After the Bell (SB2460), will require high-poverty schools to expand breakfast service models to ensure that children across the Commonwealth start their days well-fed and ready to learn. Research shows that when students eat breakfast, health outcomes improve, test scores and attendance go up, while behavior issues, tardiness, and nurse visits decrease.  Breakfast After the Bell is a supported bill for NASW-MA.

Please call your State Senator before 11:00 am today to ask them to vote YES on both the Healthy Youth Act and Breakfast After the Bell legislation. When you call, express your support for both of these bills by explaining why they matter to you as a social worker and constituent. Look up your legislators' contact information here.
