NASW-MA Chapter Calls for Substantial Funding for DCF

Recent tragic events highlight the systemic issues within the Department of Children and Families.  These problems are exacerbated by a persistent cycle of budget cuts over the past decade, resulting in $131 million decrease in direct funding to DCF.  Budget cuts strain this already overburdened system, crippling its ability to provide vital services to children and families.

The Department of Children and Families should be immune to budget cuts.  Moreover, it should receive greater financial support to match its increasing and more complicated caseloads.  The National Association of Social Workers – Massachusetts Chapter proposes allocating $197 million for social workers and case management, an amount that will provide the resources necessary to implement the Child Welfare League of America’s recommended caseload standards.

This is not a political issue; it is a human rights issue.  DCF is the last line of defense for many children and families in the Commonwealth, and NASW calls upon the Legislature to increase funding to ensure both safety and quality care.

The National Association of Social Workers – Massachusetts Chapter is the largest professional social work organization in the Commonwealth with over 7,700 members.  The mission of the Massachusetts chapter is to advance professional social work practice and the profession and to promote human rights, social and economic justice, and unimpeded access to services to all.
