It came to our attention that the American Counseling Association (ACA) had published a Fact Sheet explaining the differences between a counselor and social worker in what we felt was an inaccurate and offensive manner. We sent them the following:
“It has recently been brought to the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers’ attention that the American Counseling Association (ACA) has incorrectly and disparagingly described the field of social work in its published fact sheet (attached). Instead of focusing on licensed social workers’ legal scope of practice, professional, academic, and field requirements, and its ecological perspective of evaluating and treating clients from a person-in-environment viewpoint, it used incorrect and outdated stereotypes that have been dismissed for years by informed professionals. The Chapter is astonished at another mental health professional association’s misguided characterization and communication.”
The ACA responded with an apology and a promise to pull the Fact Sheet and edit it to remove any references to professions outside of counseling before it is reposted.

National NASW also replied to ACA. Full texts can be found in the March FOCUS.
