NASW-MA Internship Program

Second Year or Advanced Standing MSW Students interning at NASW-MA Chapter have the opportunity to work alongside chapter staff and statewide partners, gaining professional experience and networking opportunities from the two following positions (24/hrs a week):

 

Legislative Advocacy and LEAD Coordinator Intern

The primary and year-long project for this person is planning our largest annual State House event, the Legislative Education and Advocacy Day or LEAD at the State House with supervision from the Political Director (approximately 650 participants). Additional activities include attending grassroots coalition meetings focused on passing legislation from our legislative agenda, and regularly interfacing with elected officials amongst other activities pertaining to legislation and political advocacy.
  • Plans and executes LEAD, including: coordinating venue rentals, liaisoning with speakers and legislative sponsors, creating and monitoring LEAD budget and other related logistics.
  • Accompanies NASW-MA staff to monthly coalition meetings based on intersection with LEAD, Chapter priority legislation, personal preference, and availability.
  • Accompanies the Political Director to legislator meetings in the State House including lobby days, legislative hearings, and other related events.
  • Assists the Political Director with detailed analysis of policy and legislation as it is drafted and changes in real-time during the legislative session.
  • Writes 1-2 articles for Social Work Voice, our Chapter’s bi-monthly magazine, with guidance from the Communications Director.
  • Other legislative, political, or policy work as assigned, including, but not limited to: supporting the organizing of a professional lobby day, social media activities for LEAD and in support of other Social Work Month activities, supporting organizing efforts for a legislative breakfast and/or legislative awards events.

Nonprofit Management & Development Intern

This position is a unique opportunity for a student who is interested in non-profit management and assisting our members advance their professional growth. The person in this role will have a keen interest in event planning and programming and will play a significant role in the logistics of the bi-annual Symposium event that draws 700-800 social workers to a two-day conference in Framingham.  This position is supervised by the Executive Director and works closely with the Director of Clinical Practice, Events and Program Manager, and other staff.

  • Accompanies the Executive Director to board meetings, committee meetings, and other recurring activities such as our Racial Justice Council.
  • Learns about Chapter financials, including creating and monitoring a budget for a non-profit membership organization.
  • Engages in membership recruitment and retention activities including data analysis on successful membership initiatives at other chapters and the MA Chapter.
  • Monitors monthly membership numbers and coordinate with ED and regional staff on engagement activities.
  • Assists staff in executing Symposium and/or LEAD, including: volunteer recruitment and management, attending planning meetings, and other needs.
  • Works with the Political Director to plan a professional lobby day at the State House (approximately 25-50 participants).
  • Writes 1-2 articles for Social Work Voice, the Chapter’s bi-monthly magazine, with guidance from the Communications Director.

Both positions include weekly supervision and provide activities as required by Schools of Social Work to meet graduation requirements.
