Symposium 2020: Call for Proposals

Symposium 2020 will be held April 30 - May 1, 2020 at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel, Framingham, Massachusetts.

Submit a proposal to present your area of expertise to the largest gathering of Social Workers and Allied Professionals in New England. The premier event on the Social Work calendar - nearly 1,000 people attended Symposium 2018, including 90+ presenters and 70+ exhibitors. We eagerly await your submission!

Instructions for Submission

The NASW Massachusetts Chapter invites NASW members and non-members to submit proposals for presentation at Symposium 2020, the Chapter’s celebrated biennial statewide conference for and by professional social workers and allied professionals. The goals of the presentations are to advance knowledge and skill in the areas of direct practice, administration, advocacy, policy, research, education, and theory.

Social work’s power is in its diversity. Submissions on all aspects of social work practice and policy are welcome and will be assessed on the following basis:

  • Clarity, organization, and quality of writing.
  • Experience with and depth of knowledge about the proposal content.
  • Innovation and creativity in practice, theory, policy, research, administration, or education.
  • Relevance and applicability to clinical, mezzo, and macro practice, with and for diverse populations.


  • Must plan for a 90-minute presentation and attendance from 10-150 people.
    A limited number of 3-hour slots may be available. The program planning committee makes the final decision.

  • Allow for a maximum of 3 presenters.

  • Receive discounted registration fees when attending the whole Symposium, as well as great visibility before the professional community.

Application Process

All completed Symposium 2020 Call for Proposals applications MUST be submitted by May 17, 2019 (extended from May 10, 2019).
Proposal Writer's FAQs
BEFORE SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL, you should have the following information
ready to fill out, “cut and paste” or attach:

A. Proposal Cover Sheet:

  1. An enticing, captivating presentation title (8 words or less) that clearly conveys the presentation content.

  2. Level, length, and category of presentation.

B. Presenter Information:

  1. Maximum of 3 presenters: Each presenter’s name, highest social work and/or other academic degree, license level, current job title, and employer. Indicate lead presenter if there is more than one presenter. All communications regarding Symposium 2020 go to the lead presenter who is responsible for conveying information to co-presenters.

  2. Each presenter’s mailing address, phone numbers (work and home), and email address.

  3. NASW membership number or the words “Non-Member”.

C. Audio / Visual Equipment Request

Available AV equipment includes LCD projector and a screen. Microphones will be provided based on size of room.

  • Presenters MUST bring their own laptop.

  • MAC users MUST bring their OWN LCD projector cables and adaptors (no exceptions will be made).

D. Questions Regarding Your Proposed Presentation

The following questions may be answered with bullet points and/or 1-2 sentences):

  1. What is/are the core idea(s) of the presentation?

  2. What is the theoretical foundation or research which is the basis for the presentation?

  3. What innovations in direct practice, administration, policy, research, education, or theory are featured in your presentation?

  4. What is the connection of your topic to issues of social and economic justice, culture, ethics, advocacy and/or policy? Please be specific.

  5. Every presentation must address issues of diversity. How will your presentation address them? Please be specific.

  6. How will your presentation format engage the audience and promote interaction? (Based on feedback from past attendees, it is not acceptable to just read your PowerPoint presentation.)

E. Abstract

Abstract must be a maximum of 250 words.

F. Learning Objectives

List three measurable / observable learning objectives.

G. Summary of Your Program

Up to a 30-Word Summary of your presentation for use in the Symposium Program Book.                          Summary should be captivating, appealing, and interesting.

H. Reading List

Reading list must include entries from the past 5 years and no fewer than 5 scholarly articles or books. You must use the APA approved format, which can be found by clicking here.

I. Resume(s)

For each presenter upload his/her/their resume (students, indicate school affiliation).

The website form MUST be received by May 17, 2019 (extended from May 10, 2019).
 The Symposium Committee encourages experienced and new presenters to submit proposals. If your proposal is accepted, you can participate in a free training to sharpen your presentation skills. The Program Planning Committee expects to notify authors of its decisions by October 1, 2019.
