In this 90 minute lecture, Olivia Phillips, M.Div, and Kate Johnson, LICSW, will propose a variety of approaches to the subject of “death and dying”. Participants will be provided with a historical overview of how Americans have dealt with death. Presenters will be talking about the impact of culture, society, psychology and religion on the dying experience. There will be a literature review of the psychology of death and dying and we will discuss whether there such thing as a “will to live?” We will also discuss the phenomenon of the near-death experience-including scientific research and common themes for end of life. Using their mutual experience in the hospice industry, the presenters will share relevant case studies and encourage participants to explore their own thoughts and feelings on this universal life event.
