Title: Black Motherhood and the Invisible Burden of Race, Racism, and Implicit Bias

This webinar will be hosted by the NASW-RI Chapter (CEUs approved by NASW-MA)

Program description: This presentation will take audience members on a journey of Black Motherhood and the role that race, racism, and implicit bias has on that journey. Through vignettes, improv, and interactive exercises participants will actively engage with the material. The presentation is meant to be thought-provoking by allowing time for self-reflection and questions. In addition to the personal journey, participants will discuss relevant scientific research and how this increased knowledge will or has impacted their professional practice.

Three learning objectives:

  • Understand the concept of implicit bias, how our brains work, and the common ways that implicit bias is manifested in the workplace and in society in general
  • Understand the different types of racism and how it impacts patient care and patient outcome
  • Identify, analyze and address bias in real-time, including how to constructively address ‘offenders’ through proper timing and tone, and utilization of de-escalation techniques
