Thursday, October 6 (12:00 - 1:30pm EST)


Learn about practical ways that social workers can engage with the political system to increase political justice and support their clients and communities, including both partisan and non-partisan activities. We will talk specifically about the role that social workers can play in voting as we get closer to the 2022 elections. The presentation will highlight the ways in which our current political systems disadvantage individuals based on race, ethnicity, physical and mental health/ability, and economic status.

  • Define political social work and political justice and connect both to social work values

  • Provide concrete examples of opportunities for social workers to engage with political systems

  • Talk about social work's involvement in the 2022 election and ways to get involve


Speaker bio: Dr. Lane is an Associate Professor in the Wurzweiler School of Social Work and the Associate Director of Dissertation Advising for the WSSW PhD Program. She is the author (with Suzanne Pritzker) of Political Social Work: Using Power to Create Social Change (2018, Springer Publishing) and of Social Welfare Policy in a Changing World (2019, Sage Publishing) with Elizabeth Palley and Corey Shdaimah.


Dr. Lane began her career working for the United States Senate, where she was hired as a staff member for Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle while still an undergraduate at the George Washington University. She received her MSW from the University of Michigan and returned to Capitol Hill to work for Senators Daschle, Pryor, and Nelson. Since 2004, she has been affiliated with the Nancy A. Humphreys Institute for Political Social Work at the University of Connecticut School of Social Work. She has worked with the Humphreys Institute to coordinate and evaluate the Campaign School for Social Workers, a two-day training that has trained more than 2,300 social work students and professionals from around the country to run for political office and hold leadership positions in political settings. She earned her PhD in Social Work from the University of Connecticut, and has taught social work policy, macro practice, and research at four universities. Dr. Lane shares her passion for political action by researching strategies to increase the political involvement of social workers and underserved populations. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Social Policy and Research and is the Deputy Registrar of Voters in Bethany, Connecticut.
