School social workers are in a unique position to connect with trans and gender diverse youth at a time when developmentally appropriate, gender affirming care can greatly reduce the instances of health disparities across the lifespan. This workshop will provide vital information to support trans and gender diverse students, and their families, while navigating a complex array of educational, psychosocial, legal and ethical considerations. We will move beyond basics about trans identities and emphasize building a toolbox of affirmative interventions at the individual, family, school and community level to support trans and gender diverse students. Earn 3 CEUs on Friday, March 10.
Objectives: Define current concepts and affirmative language related to trans and gender diverse identities Review the current data on trans and gender diverse youth, identity development and evidence-based treatment guidelines Identify strategies for supporting trans and gender diverse students and their families Discuss the role of School Social Workers in creating a supportive educational environment that is inclusive of transgender and gender diverse students
