Program Description

The program content enhances macro social work practice by giving participants knowledge about public policy relevant to Nursing Home Residents and elderly in the community. The program enhances clinical skills through knowledge of social isolation of elderly nursing home residents, grieving and suicide in the elderly, multicultural issues in the nursing home, legal issues in the nursing home, and dealing with nursing home residents with drug and alcohol addiction.

To gain a better understanding of how the nursing home has evolved in the last 10 years, to identify trends in culture change , and to learn what happened to various movements, such as the Greenhouse Project, and how these changes have affected the role of the Social Worker in the nursing home.

To be informed about how Social Workers are dealing with the changing approaches and changing population of the nursing home by learning about the Greenhouse project, a multicultural nursing home, and Residents with alcohol and drug addictions, and how to successfully integrate these approaches in working with nursing home residents.

To gain an understanding of the multi variable components of grief and loss in the elderly, which may lead to increased risk of suicide, to become better informed about legal issues in the nursing home, and to better understand the DPH Survey process and areas of Social Work compliance.
